Possibility Mentor – McKeown School of Education
The Possibility Mentors program is a collaboration between Salem State University and Collins Middle School (Salem Public Schools) that connects SSU student Mentors with 7th graders through facilitated small group sessions throughout the year. The Possibility Mentors curriculum is designed around personal development, confidence building, fostering a sense of belonging, and academic skill building. SSU Mentors will visit Collins Middle School three times in the fall and three times in the spring to facilitate two small group sessions with two groups of approximately eight 7th graders. At the end of each semester, Collins students will come to SSU's campus for an immersive college experience. The dates for the sessions at Collins and the SSU campus visit are as follows:
- Fall Collins visit: October 19th, November 2nd, November 9th
- Fall SSU campus visit: November 16th
- Spring Collins visits: March 22nd, March 29th, April 5th
- Spring SSU Campus Visit: April 12th
Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan to attend SSU Mentor training the week of October 12th (date and time TBD, approximately a 1.5 hour commitment)
- Attend all six Mentoring Sessions at Collins and both SSU Campus Visits, as indicated in the job descriptions (each visit approximately a 2.5 hour commitment)
- Facilitate provided activities and/or small group discussions for two groups of approximately eight 7th graders during each session at Collins Middle School
- Build rapport within small groups and encourage possibility thinking in students
- Demonstrate empathy, active listening, and affirmative mentorship
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must:
- Be able to attend all scheduled Mentoring Sessions and SSU Campus Visits
- Possess good communication, time management, and organizational skills

- are pursuing or interested in exploring a career in education
- are seeking opportunities to engage with the greater Salem community
- are interested in serving as a mentor and role model for younger students
SSU students of all majors and backgrounds are invited to apply. Education majors, speakers of multiple languages, students who are the first in their family to go to college, and graduates of Salem Public Schools are encouraged to apply.
