GIS and Planning Intern for the City of Salem – Geography and Sustainability
The Geography & Sustainability Department will be working with the City of Salem for this internship opportunity. Within the City of Salem, the Department of Planning and Community Development (DPCD) is responsible for a wide range of activities and duties, including economic development, land use planning, housing policy, historic preservation, park system planning and improvements, open space conservation programs, neighborhood improvement efforts, and public art planning and implementation. Through this internship work, the successful candidate will interface with the public, community groups, and elected officials and collaborate with the City’s Engineering, Sustainability & Resiliency, Transportation, and Parks & Recreation departments to advance planning community development projects.
Duties and Responsibilities
The DPCD Intern will work closely with planners on numerous projects and initiatives related to a variety of subjects. Examples of past intern work include data collection, entry, analysis, and presentation; development of maps for both internal and public use; preparing graphic and written content for public facing documents; website editing; support for public engagement activities; and research and analysis for planning and policy initiatives.
The intern will work onsite up to 10 hours per week through the fall 2026 semester. The intern’s schedule may be flexible within DPCD’s regular hours: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday to Wednesday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, and 8:00 a.m. to noon Friday. Opportunities to participate in public meetings and outreach activities outside these hours may arise.
Minimum Qualifications
Intern candidates should display a general interest in urban planning and municipal project. The preferred candidate will have completed coursework in GIS, geography, and related subjects and demonstrate general computer proficiency, research skills, and the ability to communicate effectively in writing, orally, and through visual media.
