Advanced Math Learning Center Tutor – Mathematics
About the Math Learning Center (MLC):
The Math Learning Center, located in the Sullivan Building within the Mathematics Department, offers both remote and in-person tutoring. Staffed by qualified SSU tutors, the MLC supports students in understanding mathematical concepts, developing effective study strategies, and avoiding common errors. It also provides a welcoming space for independent study or group work. Whether students are preparing for a test, working on a project, or seeking homework help, the MLC is here to support their success.
The MLC is dedicated to supporting all students enrolled in courses involving mathematics. While walk-ins are welcome, we encourage students to schedule an appointment—especially during busy times like exams or project deadlines. Position Summary
The Advanced Math Learning Center Tutor is an experienced tutor who provides high-level academic support across a wide range of mathematics courses while also supporting the daily operations of the MLC. Senior Tutors are trusted team members who demonstrate strong content knowledge, reliability, and leadership, and who can serve as a point of contact during MLC operations when the Coordinator is unavailable.
Duties and Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities

Provide tutoring support for a broad range of undergraduate mathematics courses

Maintain consistent punctuality, reliability, and professionalism

Support a welcoming, inclusive, and student-centered learning environment

Serve as a resource for newer tutors, modeling effective tutoring practices

Assist with basic MLC operations during assigned shifts, including:

Supporting student flow

Addressing routine questions

Communicating issues to the MLC Coordinator as needed

Share observations, challenges, and successes with the MLC Coordinator to support continuous improvement
Minimum Qualifications
Qualifications
-
Minimum of 2–3 semesters of successful tutoring experience in the Math Learning Center

Demonstrated ability to tutor multiple mathematics courses at different levels

Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment

Student in good academic standing
-
Commitment to supporting students from diverse backgrounds
?Preferred Qualifications

Experience tutoring statistics, business math, and/or calculus
-
Familiarity with MLC procedures and campus systems (e.g., Navigate 360)
Wages
$17.00/hr
