Internship/Research Assistant CEEDS – Geography and Sustainability
The successful candidate will support the Center for Entrepreneurship, Economic Development & Sustainability (CEEDS) in advancing campus-wide sustainability initiatives, including the Sustainability Seal program, faculty-led sustainability research, and community-based economic impact work.
The intern will collaborate with student groups, faculty, staff, and regional partners to gather sustainability data, support outreach and engagement, and assist with applied research related to sustainability, geography, and regional development. The position also includes supporting faculty and CEEDS partners by creating written summaries, data analysis and StoryMaps that showcase sustainability efforts, research findings, and community projects.
This internship provides hands-on experience in sustainability coordination, applied research, economic analysis, geospatial storytelling, and campus–community collaboration.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Support the implementation and tracking of the Sustainability Seal program, including documentation, communication, and coordination with participating units.
- Assist with campus sustainability efforts related to food insecurity, waste reduction, energy awareness, outreach events, and student engagement initiatives.
- Collaborate with student organizations, faculty committees, and community partners on sustainability, climate action, and economic development projects.
- Conduct online research on sustainability best practices, community resilience, higher education initiatives, and regional economic trends.
- Support faculty-led sustainability and economic development research, including literature review, data compilation, and organizational tasks.
- Utilize Google Drive, Excel/Sheets, and word-processing software to organize and track project data.
- Analyze data and summarize findings in tables, written summaries, or visual formats.
- Assist in preparing economic impact reports for CEEDS, Salem State University, and community organizations.
- Create ArcGIS StoryMaps to visually communicate sustainability projects, research outcomes, campus initiatives, and community engagement work.
- Contribute to presentations, progress updates, summary reports, and outreach materials for internal and external audiences.
- Attend CEEDS meetings and project check-ins as needed to support sustainability and research goals.
Minimum Qualifications
- Interest in sustainability, geography, environmental studies, community development, economic development, or related fields.
- Ability to conduct thorough online research and evaluate information critically.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Dependable, timely, and able to follow through on project tasks.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple assignments.
- Experience with Google Workspace and Excel/Sheets preferred (training available).
- Experience with or willingness to learn ArcGIS StoryMaps, training can be provided.
Wages
$17.00/hr
