Orientation Assistant – Student Life

The office of Orientation is committed to providing students with a meaningful leadership opportunity to enhance their development outside of the classroom. Orientation Assistants (OAs) assist with the planning and implementation of all orientation events, provide support to orientation leaders, and assist throughout the academic year with programming sponsored by the office. As student leaders of Salem State, OAs serve as resources, facilitators, and representatives of the university.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support Orientation Leaders in different activities
  • Assist in material creation for training, new student orientation, and other projects as assigned
  • Assist professional staff with orientation planning, alongside administrative responsibilities
  • Collaborate and develop summer long programming for students who already have attended orientation to maintain a relationship with OLs and the university
  • Develop strong staff morale and cohesion
  • Assist in creating Welcome Week Initiatives
  • Assist in daily operations of the office
  • Serve as a role model and resource to new students while professionally representing the university
  • Share knowledge about the university, campus resources, and expectations and refer students appropriately
  • Provide encouragement and support in a welcoming environment for new students and their supporters
  • Develop and display a foundational level of understanding regarding social justice, diversity, and inclusion
  • Engage in meaningful self-reflective leadership development throughout the year
  • Make calls to encourage and welcome students and families to the Salem State community
  • Create, set up, and break down different University spaces used during Orientation

Minimum Qualifications

  • Eligibility to work as a student employee through September 2024
  • Be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student for the duration of employment
  • Minimum cumulative 2.5GPA and be in good academic and conduct standing with the university throughout employment
  • Ability to work as a team member
  • Flexibility - the ability to change with ease and to adapt to new situations
  • Proven independent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Enthusiasm and a positive attitude
  • Must be available to staff all orientation sessions (final dates will be made available at the time of offer)
  • Must participate in all required pre-orientation training sessions (final dates will be made available at the time of offer)
  • Must attend orientation new hire meeting
  • If taking Summer coursework, it must be approved to ensure it does not conflict with the orientation job requirements

$15.00/hr
