Sustainability Intern – Facilities

The Sustainability Office seeks one to two interns to provide a variety of supporting activities including: 1. help to manage the campus Freecycle tables in the lobbies of each of the residence halls and recycling on campus generally; 2. water 6-10 trees and the pollinator garden weekly (until November); 3. help to manage sustainability social media and other written and online communications; 4. participate in tabling events; 5. manage the pilot composting program in Atlantic Hall; 6. enter and display utility data; 7. brainstorm new programs and improvements; and 8. perform other duties as needed. The two interns may have different responsibilities depending on their skills, interests, and schedules.

Hours are flexible and can vary from 1-2 hours up to 6 hours weekly, depending on how the duties are assigned to the two interns. To apply: Please email Tara Gallagher at tgallagher@salemstate.edu with the following:

Duties and Responsibilities

Duties:

  • Maintain pollinator garden: Water garden if needed.
  • Support social media and encourage behavior change: Post to Instagram, Twitter and Facebook about green transportation and other programs and encourage students to adopt more sustainable behaviors.
  • Support the promotion of various sustainability programs via poster development, tabling support, and other means.
  • Support Freecycle tables in all five residence halls by keeping tables neat, removing inappropriate items, bringing certain items to the textile recycling containers. To ensure that the Freecycle program is well used by students, it may be necessary to move some items from one residence hall to another from time to time.
  • Support marketing of recycling and freecycling programs.
  • Possibly support recycling and waste management programs via waste audits, review of container placement, signage and other means.
  • Perform additional tasks related to sustainability or environmental health and safety as needed.
  • Water 6-10 trees until November.
  • Enter utility data and do limited data display.
  • Help brainstorm improvements and undertake other duties, as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of and passion for sustainability
  • Ability to work independently
  • Good attention to detail
  • Excellent oral and written communication
  • Social media skills
  • Gardening skills or interest helpful
  • Experience with Excel helpful

Wages

$16.00/hr
