Sustainability Data Intern – Facilities

The intern(s) will support the Salem State University Sustainability Coordinator and the Energy Manager in evaluating and presenting data related to the university’s greenhouse gas footprint, recycling and waste management, and overall environmental impact. This work helping the university to understand its energy use and environmental impact will enable us to identify opportunities for improvement and to engage the community in the collective work necessary to move forward. Training on SSU energy tracking systems will be provided.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Restructure the sustainability reporting spreadsheet and associated charts and graphs to ensure accuracy, ease of use, and communication effectiveness
  • Review sustainability reporting dashboards at other universities and summarize best practices and identify creative ideas that SSU could learn from
  • Learn to use the Hatch energy system that Salem State uses for building energy data
  • Develop a building-by-building energy tracking system
  • Perform data entry and data formatting and benchmark building energy performance against the EPA Energy Star performance standards
  • Develop system for tracking building electrical demand charges
  • Restructure the waste, recycling and composting reporting system and upgrade the standard charts used to communicate progress. Review waste reporting at other universities for ideas.
  • Review the Recyclemania program and provide your recommendations on whether SSU should join
  • Suggest recycling behavior change campaign linked to data communication
  • Develop tracking system for AASHE Stars reporting
  • Perform other duties as requested
  • Meet virtually on a regular basis with Sustainability Coordinator and/or Energy Manager

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience with data analysis and presentation
  • Expert in Excel and PowerPoint
  • Ability to troubleshoot data and spreadsheet formatting issues
  • Knowledge of and interest in sustainability
  • Ability to work independently; this will be a virtual position
  • Attention to detail
  • Excellent oral and written communication

Wages

$13.50/hr
