Orientation Leader – Student Life

Orientation leaders are role models who serve a vital purpose in the transition of new first-year students and their families, transfer students, and international students into the Salem State community. Orientation Leaders (OLs) are dedicated leaders who possess strong communication skills, a desire to be a part of a team and take pride in being a Viking. OLs create a community within small groups and connect with individual students and family members, as well as manage important details that ensure orientation programming runs efficiently and effectively. Orientation Leaders assist with the implementation of all orientation programs and events, including summer orientation, winter orientation and welcome week. As student leaders of Salem State, Orientation Leaders serve as a resource, facilitators, and representatives of the university.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as a role model and resource to new students while representing the university professionally
  • Share knowledge about the university, campus resources, and expectations
  • Lead campus tours, provide directions, and escort students and families as they acclimate to Salem State
  • Facilitate engaging group discussions around topics such as diversity, community values, and involvement
  • Provide encouragement and support in a welcoming environment for new students and their families
  • Collaborate with other Orientation Leaders, Student Orientation professional staff, supervisors, and other campus administrators to develop, prepare, implement, and evaluate Orientation programs
  • Assist staff with administrative preparation in advance of orientation sessions
  • Develop and display a foundational level of understanding regarding social justice, diversity, and inclusion
  • Engage in meaningful self-reflective leadership development throughout the Orientation experience
  • Adapt to changing environment with positivity and flexibility
  • Report to team leaders or orientation assistants if problems arise
  • Assist in setting up and breaking down Orientation Day events
  • Assist in setting up and breaking down Welcome Week events

Minimum Qualifications

  • Eligibility to work as a student employee through September 2024
  • Enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student for the duration of employment
  • Minimum cumulative 2.5GPA and be in good standing with the university throughout employment
  • Ability to work as a team member
  • Flexibility - the ability to change with ease and to adapt to new situations
  • Proven independent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Enthusiasm and a positive attitude
  • Must be available to staff all orientation sessions and welcome week
  • Must participate in all required pre-orientation training sessions
  • There is an opportunity to live on campus, if needed, during the orientation sessions in June and August at a discounted rate
  • Summer coursework must be approved to ensure it does not conflict with the orientation job requirements
